GREENPORT, N.Y. (CBS) ― A Long Island community was jarred
after learning a popular female teacher's aide took part in an alleged love
affair that has her facing rape charges. Maria Commins, a 39-year-old mother
of three, is accused of sleeping with her son's 15-year-old friend. Commins
was a teacher's aide at Greenport Elementary School, where her three
children attend school. Superintendent Charles Kozora told CBS 2 she was a
favorite among the students. If you described this scenario, and lined up 23
of my staff members, Maria would be the last one you expected would do this,
Kozora said. But last Friday, private investigator Anthony Pagliughi tracked
Commins and the boy to a Riverhead hotel. Pagliughi, who'd been hired by
Commins' husband because they were in a custody battle, called police.
Friday morning he contacted me because he was under the impression he had
allegations something like this was going on and happening then, Pagliughi
said.
According to police, after answering the door she said she'd picked up the
boy, bought some beer, checked into the hotel, and had sexual relations
twice. Police said Commins admitted to having sex seven or eight different
times with the boy before getting caught. Commins was arrested, plead not
guilty, and posted $500 bail.
There was no answer at Commins' home, but neighbors say they're shocked.
It's not good. She's an older woman and he's a kid, said Aura Fuentes. At
school, teachers and parents alike were wondering why she would have an
affair with a child.
Police said Commins told them she loves the boy, and he loves her.
Her next court date is April 8.
